Q: Patch OSS449A

Q: Patch OSS449A

Post by Marcus Giesse » Thu, 17 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hi,

I have downloaded the patch OSS449A a few days ago. Its name "Network
performance patch" sounds very good but I remember that there was a
discussion about this patch in this group (or *.programmer).

I use 5.0.2. Please help: Shall I install the patch?

Thanks for any hint
Marcus

Well, the name is just wrong.  It should be called "Networking
Maintenance Supplement" or something like that; "Performance" is totally
misleading.

But anyway... the patch applies to both 5.0.0 and 5.0.2.  So you *can*
install it.  Do you have a reason to?  If you aren't trying to solve a
specific problem, I would recommend that you wait.  A replacement
version, oss449d (or some other letter) is being worked on.  oss449a has
a known panic that a few people have run into.

1. Kernel Panic after OSS449A Patch install (Help!)

I installed the FULL patch installation, OOS449A, on my OpenServer 5.0.0
machine.

Everything seemed to go smoothly after patch install and after kernel
relinking.

When I rebooted, the machine almost finalized the boot process, I
received the last message...
SCO PC-interface for UNIX started,
then I received the following...

Unexpect trap in kernel mode:

PANIC: K_trap_kernel mode trap type 0x0000000E

...etc...

And then it tried to dump the image to swap and the machine would hang.
-------------------
I Rebooted in Single-user mode and "RolledBack" the UNIX patch ONLY!
(not the NFS or TCP/IP OSS449A Patch).  Then again I rebooted and the
machine came up normally.

Obviously the whole patch is not installed.  Has anyone else experienced
this problem with the patch?

What can be causing this and is there an updated patch that will not
cause this problem?

I was told that installing this patch would solve some network problems
with my system.

Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot.

Hope this is enough information.

Jim
