Panic: lock timeout

Post by j.. » Fri, 10 Nov 2000 04:00:00

We have a Dell 1300 which every once in a while stops with the
message:
PANIC: locktimout caller ... lock ... owner=CPU1

It's trying to dump, but nothing happens.

Configuration is as follows:

Software:
OSE 505m
OSE 505A rel. supp.
SCO SMP 1.1.1Eb
oss497c
oss600a
oss610a

We use this system as our mail-server, so sendmail 8.8.8b is
running on this. It's also a seconday nameserver.

Any suggestions to have this solved are much appreciated.

If you wrote Your software pieces by sort of time of instalation You did
mistake by installing SCO SMP after rs505a and you have unpatched SMP
components. Correct this by uninstalling all patches (in invert way) just to
OSE 505m and patch it again in correct sort.
You should install oss471f too.

1. PANIC: lock timeout

This happens some nights, not all.
It is *always* after everyone has logged out and gone home and *before*
our nightly cron backup at 23:00. From what we can deduce, it is usually
between 22:00 and 23:00.
We have a dual 166 Pentium with 32MB running 3.2v5.0.2.

The screen says:

PANIC: lock timeout lock = 000001, owner = F013487F
Unable to freeze processor 1, proceeding...
PANIC: lock timeout lock = 00000101, owner = F013487F
Trying to dump 8095 pages
[snip]
Safe to power off
[etc]

If I then press <enter> the machine attempts to reboot but sticks on
"BIOS Installed Successfully" (i.e. after checking the SCSI devices).

I have to reset or hard-boot in order to carry on.

Although this is only an inconvenience at present, I am worried that it
might spread into the working day and become a nightmare. Also, I am
curious to know what is happening. (I have searched the online manual
withut success.)

TIA for any help.
