SLIP, CSLIP or PPP program for SCO Unix

Post by Felipe Barous » Tue, 02 May 1995 04:00:00

Hello:

I am looking for a SLIP, CSLIP or PPP program for a SCO Unix machine.

What I am trying to do is to dial into the unix box from a PC
running windows and netmanage chamaleon tcp/ip and once logged in
the unix computer, AT the shell level give a command like 'slip' or
'cslip' or 'ppp' (or similar command, that will be send fromthe
login script of netmanage chamaleon tcp/ip) in order to establish the
IP session.

I'd be interested in getting the sources for SCO Unix and, if possible
the binaries as well.

I know SCO Unix has PPP, but it's quite limited and not usable for me
now. I am interested in getting a new program to perform the described
task.
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Felipe Barousse.

SCO ppp supports dial-in connections. You could also probably use slip/
slattach from a shell prompt if you really do need that (but you should
make it clearer as to why).

Why do you believe stock SCO PPP/SLIP won't do what you want?

Could you please elaborate a bit on how could I be doing that. I am root
on the machine, so no problems with that since I administer this host.

Because of it's limited number of PPP/LIP lines (four as far as I know) and
because it's configured based on UUCP which I dont like and because I only
want to establish SLIP or PPP sessions while logging into the system, that is
no dialout SLIP or PPP sessions.

I also want the users who login to be able to choose between a standard
asyn serial login to a UNIX shell to work as if they were at the office
on a dumb terminal or, using Chamaleon's TCP/IP scripts to login, activate
the slip or ppp and then be able to use this machine as a gateway to the
Internet and use Netscape from their home PC's, get the idea ?

Hope this helps and thanks for the assistance.

Felipe

Everest (Release 5 of SCO OpenServer) supports 64 PPP connections of which
IP addresses can be allocated from a pool of available addresses.

I can't afford to upgrade to Everest.  But I would like CSLIP so I can
dynamically assign an internet address to whoever logs in.  Also, I don't want
to use UUCP: I've had trouble getting it working under SCO.  The docs are not
clear.  What can I do?

Everest or Release 5 will provide up to 64 PPP lines. I understand SCO
is offering very cheap upgrades.
As far as the UUCP configuration, that is only applicable if you are
dialing out- which you say you don't want to do. Set up a user with
a shell of /usr/lib/ppp/ppp, and give them an entry in /etc/ppphosts like

*ppplogin ttyr026 - rtscts tmount=20 mru=1024 protcomp accomp VJ

and configure a network with netconfig.

1. Q) SLIP (or CSLIP) vs PPP which is better ?

Hello Everyone

I have just installed RH (Red Hat) 5.2.

I have two questions

1)
I want to connect to the net with my 33600 modem to get my E-Mail and
browse the WWW.
Right now I have only RH installed on one computer Pentium 200 MMX.

I plan later to create a network using my Pentium 200 MMX as the
server and the other 2 computers (386 and 486) as X Windows
workstations. I may later connect my Pentium 200 as a WWW server or
small ISP site, so I am concerned about which method is most secure
and flexible for future expansion. I like to do things the right way
now, so I do not have to reconfigure everything on my Pentium when
connecting the other computers.

I know that I need to install PPP or SLIP.
My question is which one of PPP or SLIP  is better and why ? I know
that PPP seems to becoming more popular than SLIP. I get the
impression that something called CSLIP is faster? Is SLIP faster than
PPP or are they the same?

I like to be able to later dial out from anyone of the computers out
through any one modem over one single outside line.
2)
In newsgroups I see the term
CFV
when a vote is requested?

What does CFV mean? Computer Forum Vote ?
