SCO Merge 4.0 - Windows95 does does not start

Post by Viorel Tabar » Thu, 24 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I installed Win95 on SCO Merge 4.0, the machine is running SCO
OpenServer 5.0.4p.

As soon as I run the "win" command the system loads the Virtual Bus
Mouse driver, displays the "Starting Windows" message but after that I
receive the message "You can now safely turn off your computer. If you
want to restart Windows press Ctrl-Alt-Del." so the windows is shutting
down just immediatly after it starts.

Does anybody know the reason and a solution to this?

Thank you.
Viorel

Viorel,

Yep.  This happened to me several times while I was Beta
testing Merge for SCO...  I can't recall exactly what I
did to fix it, but here are a few things I vaguely recall
doing...:

        1.  Check your "Locale Settings"
                as root, run "/usr/bin/X11/xmrgconfig"
                run "System Wide settings"
                run "View/Modify Locale Settings"

make sure your Locale is set to "Unknown"

I had problems exactly like you describe if
I set the locale to anything but "unknown"

        2.  Re-Install Merge ... Really.
Merge 4.x doesn't seem to handle system wide
changes to it's config very gracefully.

re-installing will reset everything to "factory
                default"

Hope these help...

A quicker thing to try before this is to "Create DOS Images".
When changing the locale settings Merge is supposed to do this
automatically, but the early Merge 4 versions did not, so with
those versions you have to do this step by hand.

Quote:>                 re-installing will reset everything to "factory

Removing and reinstalling Merge does not reset things to "factory default".
All settings are saved (or not removed) when the Merge package is removed.
Then when when you reinstall Merge, all your settings are put back
the way they were.  (Even the DOS that you had installed is
automatically re-installed.)  The assumption is that the only
reason anyone would want or need to remove Merge is to install
a later version. :)

1. SCO Merge 4.0 - Problem installing Windows95

System: SCO OSR enterprise 5.0.4 with Merge 4.0 on IBM clone PC.
I try installing Windows95 and the whole setup goes fine except at the
end, when the windows is re booted after loading all the files from
the installation CD, I get the following error message:
"While initializing device MRGTP, windows protection error," and
windows will not restart.

DOS (7.0) under Merge works fine. I've tried reinstalling the program,
but the same problem recurred.

I have no idea what the MRGTP device is. Any ideas? The Merge man
pages are of no help.

Thanks,
