Compatible modems

Trying to setup one of my customers with a modem. Have tried a US
Robotics 56k and 28.8 modem. Basically what happens is the modem will
answer and depending upon what speed it is set to will either give no
response or a short burst of characters, then nothing. I have followed
the FAQ as far as the AT settings, but still no luck. I looked at SCO's
compatible hardware and only saw a few 28.8 and 33.6 modems. Can anyone
suggest a good solid modem for me to use? I'm running Open Server 5.0.

thanks
rob

We have had EXCELLENT results from Multitech modems.
The MT2834BA are really top-notch.
If not too much volume on the modem usage, the Multitech ZDX works well also.
If you want to do 4 wire leased line (like connecting remote offices to a
Digi C/X) then the MT2834BL works very well.  That has been our experience.
We probably have over 100+ Multitech modems in the field, and very few
problems.

The problem isn't your modem, it's the setup.  Basically,
you need to cu to the port and set at&b1 to fix the DTE rate
to that speed.  You then need to set inittab (and the sub
files) to that speed. I have a fairly detailed writeup of this
at http://www.aplawrence.com/unixarticles.html under "Configuring
High Speed Modems".

There's more to it than this, but this would be example settings:
/usr/lib/uucp/Devices:
Direct tty?? - 38400 direct

cu -ltty?? dir
at&f
ats0=1
at&b1
at&w
~.

disable tty??
/etc/inittab
... getty -t60 tty?? o
/etc/conf/init.d/?
... getty -t60 tty?? o
enable tty??

1. compatible modems in Linux

Before I go and take the plunge and buy one of these new Sportster Voice
x2 modems, can anybody tell me if they've tested it under Linux??? Is
there anything special I should be made aware of first before I buy???
Is there any support for the 56kbps feature? I want to be sure this time
(after the Mwave fiasco...).

Will the usr sportster voice modem function under Linux (preferrably at
up-to 56kbps)???

thanx to anyone who can help...
