$ We are upgrading our old SCO Xenix system, but we would like
$ to use our old applications in our new system. will SCO Unix
$ be able to run SCO Xenix's programs, how stabile it is
$ etc?
Old is right ... 2.3.1? Even my home machine runs something slightly
newer than that (2.3.3 :-)
If your apps are well-behaved, you should not have any problems.
If they try things like
- opening /xenix and looking through kernel memory
- reading directory entries by opening and reading the directory,
rather than through OS calls
then you will probably have problems.
But in general, all versions of SCO Unix run SCO Xenix binaries
(including those written for Xenix 286 and even Xenix 86) without
problems.
I have a toolkit of some useful programs for Xenix and Unix.
They're all compiled for Xenix 386 2.3.x. They all work flawlessly
on everything I've tried them on - Xenix 386 2.3.3, 2.3.4, Unix
3.2.2, 3.2v4.0, 3.2v4.1, 3.2v4.2, and OSR5.
