Netscape News reader thingy

Netscape News reader thingy

Post by Scott Taylo » Sat, 18 Dec 1999 04:00:00

This is strange.  I have Netscape 4.6 on a Linux Mandrake 6.0 server and
it picks up mail from all new groups, I subscribe to, but this group.
The only difference being, this group has over 2500 messages in store.
The last message it downloaded was from Dec 10.  I've tried
unsubscribing and subscribing again, but nothing different.  Oh, and it
tells me there are 66 un-read messages, but they don't show up.

Does anybody know how to fix this or a better reader that can handle
this many messages?

TIA

Scott

Welcome to SCO Unix, the other (almost) free Unix company.  we're Linux
friendly.

Your header shows that you're using news.fiberone.net which is owned and
operated by Shaw who runs their own news server.  Rumors in
alt.binaries.news-server-comparison indicate that their news service is far
from exemplary.  Chances are good that they have some corrupted overviews
for this newsgroup and will probably stay corrupted until someone yells at
Shaw to rebuild them.  Swapping news readers will probably not help.
Swapping news services might.  See:
        http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/providers/
        http://members.tripod.com/~newscompare/chart.html
for finding a news service that actually works properly.

For a Netscape nooze reader replacement, dig through:
        http://www.linuxapps.com/?page=category&category=news
        http://www.linux.org/apps/internet.html
        http://www.freshmeat.net
or slog though:

Linuxapps shows 30ea readers.  I'm partial to using my ancient version of
tin 1.2 for reading news.  Methinks the current version is 1.4 or
something.

Yeah, I've tried the silly reader that came with the Linux package, all
it did was go away when I tried to open c.u.s.m.  That was too funny.
Guess I'll yell at my ISP and see what that proves.

Thanks Jeff,
That's all good to know.

1. Any News Reader Recommeded, KDE, RedHat (except Netscape & Mozilla)

I'm interested in finding a suitable newsreader for Linux, I'm using Linux
up to 75% of the time now migrating all of the apps and things I do under
windows as they seem feasible. Still some things have a way to go.

Please don't recommend Netscape or Mozilla. But are there any news readers
out there that comparable to MS Outlook Express or Xnews on Linux?
