Install Prblem with SCO rel 5

Post by Clarence Peckh » Mon, 07 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Greetings,

I am having an installation problem with Rel 5 SCO. Basically I have a
Adaptec 6360 SCSI with NEC 3xp CDROM and o disc drives. The CD rom is
address 2 on the SCSI controller. The disc is on the IDE controller and
is a seagate 3660 drive.

The system starts to boot determines all of the devices and hangs before
it prints the copyright notice.

The question is is the 6360 a supportd device?

I also tried a reveal 4X CDROM connected to the IDE interface and used
the BTLD ATAPI wd driver that came with the release of SCO rel 5 with no
success. (kernel hangs at letter G of the initialization sequence).

SCO response was send money!

I have a call into my system provider but thought I would see if anyone
on the net had any suggestions.

BTW: All of the hardware works fine using DOS 6.2 and I suspect that I
could get Linux running without to much trouble since it has worked on
all machines I have tried it with. Guess you get the inverse of what you
pay for!

Any help would be appreciated

Yes, it is listed in the HCH as supported by Vendor-supplied drivers.
SCSI CD-ROM's used to require ID=5 for installations (don't know if this
still applies

You should have received three hard copy book[let]s with your media:
        1. Release Notes
        2. OSR5 Handbook
        3. Hardware Compatibility Handbook (HCH)
Check with your provider before your check clears the bank <G>.

The 6360 is indeeb supported.  I installed yesterday with from a Tape
media attached to an Adaptec 1510.  It properly detected the 1510 and
loaded the smad package.  SCO has had built in support for the 6360 for
ages.

Now with OS5 it asks you for the ID of the CD or the Tape drive you are
installing from so you dont have the CD set to ID 5 and the Tape set to
ID 2.

Have Fun,

Scott

Apparently Release 5 is very sensitive to improper SCSI termination
than previous releases (or other OSs) particularly if the load device
(eg CD rom) and disk are both SCSI.  There must be a device connected
to the physical end of the cable.  It is not good enough to just have
one of the devices on the cable terminated.  May not be the solution
to your problem, but this is good general advice.

Scott,

Thanks for the response. I found my problem, the 6360 is wired on my
board for IRQ10 and the os expects it to be IRQ11 so is used----

defbootstr adapter=spad(0x340,10,6)

and everything works fine. Loaded the OS and the development system SW
and all is well!
