Unixware 2.1.3 data transfer to Unixware 7.1.1

I have an old ICL TeamServer running Unixware 2.1.3 and have recently
upgraded to a Dell PowerEdge 1300 running Unixware 7.1.1.

I thought it would be easy to transfer the data from the 'Live' old system
to the new system on a weekend by using the data from backup tape of the
Friday night before the cut over to the new system.

I tried this using a recent backup to enable testing to take place on the
new machine, but the Unixware 7 machine can not read the tapes from the old
machine.

The tapes are produced using the following command

cd / find . -print | cpio -oc > /dev/rmt/ctape1

The tape drive is a WangDat DDS3.

When I produce a tape on the new machine using the same command the old
machine can read it OK.

The new machine is fitted with a Python DDS4 drive.

I am using Maxell DDS3 12GB tapes cartridges.

Is it a software or a hardware problem?

I have freed an area of space on the old machine to enable me to tar the
data directories and FTP them to the new machine.

Is there a better way?
