LOGIN: ERROR - Failed to initialize policy manager (IFOR_PM_FATAL)

Post by strateg » Wed, 06 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

We have recently recieved the following error when attempting logins via telnet -

LOGIN: ERROR - Failed to initialize policy manager (IFOR_PM_FATAL) Login session denied.

Only the root user is allowed login at the console for emergency administration. Is this an issue regarding Licensing? We have upgraded from
3.2v4.2 to OpenServer Host and then to OpenServer Enterprise as per the release notes. I have licensed the system and have registered it with
SCO, but I am still receiving a message on the console that the product was not registered. When I enter the License Manager it shows the "
OpenServer 5 Operating System to be Licensed and Registered".

Any ideas? Have I missed a step somewhere? Is this fixable? This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. SCO support has yet to
return my call!

Thanks for your time,

Eric Ilaqua

I have found the fix in the SCO SSL support files on SCO's Web page. There was a missing link to /pmd. I have run the fix program in Scoadmin
and re-booted and the problem was solved. I still don't know why this happened.

Thanks to all

strategy propounded certain bytes, to wit:
| Hello,

| We have recently recieved the following error when attempting logins via telnet -
|
| LOGIN: ERROR - Failed to initialize policy manager (IFOR_PM_FATAL) Login session denied.

There's a Technical Article on this very thing. Search SCO's database, or
ask for this article in CompuServe.  IC think it is too long to include in
a news article.

If you are upgrading from a 3.2v4.2 to OSE5, you should get two License
cards,
One Upgrade from 3.2v4.2 to OpenServer Host 5 and ther second one, Upgrade
from Openserver Host 5 to OpenServer Ent. 5.
The true steps during installation, is to give in first the License
(Upgrade from 4.2 to
OS.Host 5), there you will be asked the SCO 3.2v4.2 License key..etc.
After Installation, which is OpenServer Host System 5, Registrate it by
SCO.
After a neu boot, Install the OpenServer Ent. 5 and use the (Upgrade from
OS.Host
to OSE.5) License ..etc. And then registrate it by SCO.

What I think happened in your case, is that after installing the OS. Host
5, you did
not registrated it, you then installed OS Ent.5 which you then registrated.
In the License Manager on the OpenServer Ent. 5 is shown and registrated,
but
some where in it Data Bank, the Host System was not yet registrated. The
problem
is that you can not registrate the Host System, because it is not shown in
the
License Manager.
But there is a small trick:-
1- In the License Manager, remove the License from the Open Server Ent.5,
do not
worry nothing will happen to your Operating system, only few Notice
messages.
2- Boot your system neu, call the License Manager again, and there you will
see
The Host System is listed. Mark it and licenses it :
     (license-------> License a neu Product).
3- Boot your System again and then License / Registrated your Host System.
4- Boot again and then License / Registrate your Enterpreis System.

Good Luck

1. Error can't login "Failed to initialise policy manager" (Openserver 5 new installation)

Has anyone a clue whats wrong here, I have just installed Openserver 5
and it will only let me login on tty01, and then grudgingly (It says
"Overriding system login limit on tty01 only to allow emergency system
administration").

On other terminals it says "Error- Failed to initialise policy
manager. (IFOR_PM_FATAL) Login session denied.". The logs me out.

Any ideas anyone ?

Phil.
