SCO 3.2 4.2 does not work with Adaptec 2940AU

Post by colanz » Fri, 14 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I have installed a new Adaptec 2940AU (bios 1.21) but SCO does
not work. It works correctly using an old 2940 standard.
Is There a patch for newer controller?

Thanks

If there is, it would be from Adaptec.  Look on their FTP site for their
newest 3.2v4.2 2940 driver.

1. SCO 3.2 Ver 4.2 and DOS

$Right now I have a pc with two partitions, one UNIX the other DOS (5.0).
$I am moving to a new Pentium and want to load the same version of Unix
$(3.2 Ver 4.2) and go to DOS 6.22. Will my version of SCO Unix support the
$new version of DOS?  I am thinking of the DOS commands like doscp, dosrm
$etc.

AFAIK, it's not so much the version of DOS as the size of the partition
that matters.  For example, I'm running Xenix 2.3.3 here, and it expects
DOS partitions to be < 32 MB.  The manual doesn't specifically say
this, nor does it mention a specific DOS version, but I'm using DOs
5.0 (which came out after 2.3.3 did) with a C: drive of 30 MB and I
can access it quite nicely from Xenix.

My old Unix 3.2.2 manual is much more specific, though it's
perhaps a tad confusing:

"You must have DOS 3.3 or earlier installed on your system.
Extended DOS partitions are not supported."

It's entirely possible to produce a primary DOS partition of
under 32 MB with DOS versions in excess of 3.3, and such
partitions do work fine with Xenix or Unix in my experience.
So it's not the DOS version, but simply the size of the
C: drive that ought to matter.

Certainly, my 30 MB DOS 5 C: drive was created with DOS 5 (the
first 64 bytes of it are shown below) and it works fine with Xenix:

0000    eb 3c 90 4d 53 44 4f 53  35 2e 30 00 02 04 01 00   .<.MSDOS5.0.....
0010    02 00 02 38 f9 f8 3f 00  28 00 0e 00 28 00 00 00   ...8..?.(...(...
0020    00 00 00 00 80 00 29 ed  7e 29 1c 4d 53 2d 44 4f   ......).~).MS-DO
0030    53 5f 35 20 20 20 46 41  54 31 36 20 20 20 fa 33   S_5   FAT16   .3

("MSDOS5.0" is the OEM name and version which formatted the drive)
