add 2nd serial port, v3.2v4.2 hwconfig problem

Post by Alan Finl » Mon, 19 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I have an SCO 3.2v4.2 system running on an NEC PowerMate 425.  This computer
has a single serial port on the motherboard.  The computer's setup program
allows this port to be set as COM1, COM2, or disabled.  I have tried adding
a second serial port and SCO hwconfig does not report it.  I then tried
to  disable the port on the motherboard and added two ports on a standard
card using standard IRQ, port address etc (COM1:IRQ4 and COM2:IRQ3).
Dos boot from floppy is able to use these ports.  SCO on bootup still reports
only a single COM1 port.  Can I use the new port if it doesn't show up on
the "hwconfig" command?  Where does hwconfig get its information from anyway?

        Regards, Alan F.

add 2nd serial port, v3.2v4.2 hwconfig problem

The kernel is probably not setup yet for the new serial port.  Shipped Sco
will only see com1:, to setup the other ports use "mkdev serial".

add 2nd serial port, v3.2v4.2 hwconfig problem

+SCO on bootup still reports only a single COM1 port.

You need to configure the serial driver to use the port.  Use 'mkdev serial'.

+Can I use the new port if it doesn't show up on the "hwconfig" command?

No.

+Where does hwconfig get its information from anyway?

From the reports generated by the drivers when they search for hardware at
OS boot time.  The drivers will only search for hardware they have been
configured to search for.

1. BHBA SCSI - SCO UNIX 3.2v4.2 adding 2nd HD

A few other quick notes.
We went to www.ncr.com and they have some UNIX drivers but nothing for
the bhba (NCR BSCAM SCSI) infact one of their driver descriptions
specifically states that it DOES NOT contain the driver for bhba  ??
I went to www.dec.com and looked for an updated driver there, no luck.
I also went to www.sco.com and did not find any driver info.

On the Technical Articles it states that the bhba driver replaces the
/usr/lib/mkdev/hd script completely and that there might be a new one (we
have v3.0 and 3.04 may be available??), but we have been unable to find
that script.
Does anyone have the new "hd" script they could e-mail me???

Any assistance would be helpful.
