1. Can not compile programs! GCC not working

I have not been able to compile any programs since I installed Linux
5.2 (Red Hat).  When I installed I was too stupid to install the
Development packages, so I had to go into 'glint' and install the rpms
that I could figure out.
I am sure that I got most, but I keep getting the following output
in the 'config.log' file when I try to compile a new application:

configure:559: checking for gcc
configure:636: checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works
configure:650: gcc -o conftest    conftest.c  1>&5
ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:

Can someone help me in determining what the problem is?
Is there a list of Development RPMs that I need (written down) so
I know that I am installing the right ones and not missing any?

Many thanks for the help.  If possible, please respond via e-mail.
