MMDF won't deliver inbound mail

Lucky Leavell [UniXpress] telecommunicated:
| ABout 16:30 today, I realized I hadn't received any new email messages.
| Upon checking further, I found all my inbound messages sitting in
| /usr/spool/mmdf/lock/home/msg (and addr and q.local).
|
| Any ideas?

Switch to smail. It works. :-)
Or, if you have no uucp connections, switch to qmail.

If I switch to s/qmail, will I be hung out to dry when SVR5 (aka Gemini)
arrives? (I have been comtemplating all the joys of switching from MMDF to
sendmail...)

Finally, how difficult is it to switch?

Thank you,
Lucky

>  9/ 4 21:38:48 local 5165:  nonexistent dom/host (ap_dmnormalize): 'clandjop.com'

>  9/ 4 21:38:48 local 5165:  [SYSERR(17)File exists]  unable to get xenix lock
>  9/ 4 21:38:48 local 5165:  [SYSERR(17)File exists]  unable to get xenix lock

The problem appears to be with Xenix mail locks, which are obsolete and
ought to be disabled anyway.  See mmdftailor(F).  In
/usr/mmdf/mmdftailor, change MLCKTYPE to advisory (add it if it isn't
currently there).

Bela,
   You did it again!

I added the "MLCTYPE advisory" line to mmdftailor, stopped/restarted
MMDF and now Pine is behaving as it did before.  I also notice the
/usr/mmdf/bin/daemon script cleans up lock files so, should this happen
again, I can try to simply stop/start MMDF and see if that clears it up
... unless, of course, I take JP's advise and switch to smail.

Thank you,
Lucky

1. /usr/bin/mail won't deliver mail locally!

I'm running a FreeBSD 2.2.6 system that's giving me fits.

I have a user on the system whose userid is 'jones'.

If I enter '/usr/bin/mail jones', I can enter a subject, body,
and then send the message.  However nothing ever arrives in
/var/mail for jones.  I get no error messages, the postmaster
gets no error messages.  I've triple-checked the permissions
and owners on all the directories and executables I can think
of, and I've compared them with another 2.2.6 system that
works as it should.  The difference between the two systems
is the version of Sendmail - the non-functioning system has
Sendmail 8.9 on it.

BTW, if I run '/usr/libexec/mail.local jones', at least a
minimal message appears for jones in /var/mail (there are
minimal headers, etc in it).

I'm at wits end on this one.  Anyone have a clue what I've
 messed up?
