Need help with SLIP on OpenServer 5

Post by Chris Ruprec » Sat, 17 Jun 1995 04:00:00

Hello all, again.

I am running two SLIP lines out of my SCO OS 5 box and, while it was a
ODT 3 box, had no problems with that. But now it does not like me any
more. I only get one line working at any one time and it looks like it
selects which one will be working at boot time at random. I did a
FRESH installation of the OS so it's nothing left over from ODT 3. The
part in my /etc/tcp file looks like this:

/etc/slattach +e +f /dev/ttyr001 196.7.63.1 196.7.63.2 255.255.255.0 110&
/etc/slattach +e +f /dev/ttyr002 160.124.220.2 160.124.220.1 255.255.0.0 50&

Don't worry about the speed of these lines, 50 means 57600 baud, 110
means 115200 baud. These two lines where inserted by the OS 5 network
manager and not by myself.

any ideas anybody?

Kind regards,
Chris

In slattach(ADMN) is a section that reads:

  Diagnostics
  ===========

Use the +v option to turn on the printing of various messages.

What happens if you turn that on for both attachments?

What happens to the connection that doesn't work?  Does it pretend to
connect, set up routing, etc., but packets don't flow?  Show how much of
the interface comes up; contrast it to the interface that's all the way
up and working.

1. SLIP Connection to University SLIP Server: Need Help

Let's start by assuming I'm a slightly knowledgeable Linux user and an
absolute novice when it comes to networking (especially with Linux). I want to
connect to my university's SLIP server using Linux and DIP. I've read over the
DIP Networking Guide and was able to get my modem to dial to the SLIP server,
but that was about it. Pinging was fruitless and I'm plain stuck.

What do I need to know? My hostname/domainname, SLIP server's names and IP
addresses? What files do I need to modify on my Linux box? And so on. In other
words, I'm asking someone to hold my hand through all this from the beginning
setup to the final product. I have Netscape 3.0b and I'd mainly like to ftp,
telnet, use elm for mailreading, and perhaps some nn newsreading use.

Once I have a good connection, I can make my way through these tools. If
there's anyone sharp with the use of DIP to connect to a SLIP server, I'd
certainly appreciate their help via email or in this newsgroup.

Many thanks,
Gregg Casillo
