SCO Merge 4.0 - Problem installing Windows95

Post by R » Thu, 23 Dec 1999 04:00:00

System: SCO OSR enterprise 5.0.4 with Merge 4.0 on IBM clone PC.
I try installing Windows95 and the whole setup goes fine except at the
end, when the windows is re booted after loading all the files from
the installation CD, I get the following error message:
"While initializing device MRGTP, windows protection error," and
windows will not restart.

DOS (7.0) under Merge works fine. I've tried reinstalling the program,
but the same problem recurred.

I have no idea what the MRGTP device is. Any ideas? The Merge man
pages are of no help.

Thanks,

Try downloading Merge 4.1.1 from SCO's website and installing it after removing
Merge 4.0, /usr/merge, /usr/lib/merge and /etc/default/merge, plus the .merge
and merge directories in your home directory (if there's nothing important there
to save).

And for best results, use Win95 OSR2.x, not the older versions.

SCO Merge 4.0 - Problem installing Windows95

Search this newsgroup for my article and the newsgroup thread titled:
Merge 4.1.1/Win95osr2.5 Fails on OSE 5.0.5 500Mhz Box

You gave no information about your processors and their speed...
Are you running a 500Mhz Pentium III single or dual processor box?
If so: you probably will NOT be able to use Merge 4.1.1 and any version
of Windows 95.  Details on this and MRGTP are in the newsgroup thread.

Note: Merge 4.1.1 and Win95b2.5 will run on a dual Pentium II 450Mhz box.

This was bug-reported to SCO back in August, there has been NO
progress that I know of.  The last I heard from SCO on this matter
was in September.  I've had this problem for 7 months now.

I have Merge 4.1.1 and Win95 merrily running on a 5OOMhz Xeon.

1. SCO Merge 4.0 - Windows95 does does not start

I installed Win95 on SCO Merge 4.0, the machine is running SCO
OpenServer 5.0.4p.

As soon as I run the "win" command the system loads the Virtual Bus
Mouse driver, displays the "Starting Windows" message but after that I
receive the message "You can now safely turn off your computer. If you
want to restart Windows press Ctrl-Alt-Del." so the windows is shutting
down just immediatly after it starts.

Does anybody know the reason and a solution to this?

Thank you.
