System hang without panic...

System hang without panic...

Post by Max Heffl » Tue, 16 Jul 1996 04:00:00

My SCO 3.2.4v2 system has been haning regularly lately and not panicing.
In X, the mouse will freeze up and things are dead as not logins can be
made.  I reset the machine and frequently there are no files placed in
lost+found.  I tried to reduce my 20M to sets of 16M in
/etc/default/boot but the problem persisted.  It there any systematic
way to figure out where the problem is?  I used to have a desciption of
saving crash dumps to tape but don't know where I have placed it.  Any
help would be appreciated.  TIA!

Had similar symptoms, thought it was hardware.  Turned out to be Olympus
tune up software.  Remove it, if installed!

Are you using one of the motherboards with the chipset that
does not use parity even if parity memory is installed.  That
will also give the above symptom.

We need a bit of HW info to go along with the software info.

1. Re; System hangs without panic...

I have more information.  As long as I stay out of the XFree86 screen
and stay on one of the ASCII multiscreens, I have no hang.  This is
relatively new behavior without any new hardware or soaftware.  Is it
possible for the Trident board to hang the entire system?  Could there
be a bug or misconfiguration in XFree86 that would cause this?  I
have not changed versions or configuration of XFree86 in years.  TIA.
