Binary compatible ?

Post by Joao Nat » Sat, 27 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me if OpenServer 5 is binary compatible with prior
versions of SCO Unix ? i.e., executables obtained under 3.2v4.? will run
on OS5 ?

TIA.

I'm pretty sure this is in the FAQ for this group....

It runs "well behaved" binaries, which is the vast majority of them.
Things that have intimate knowledge of internal kernel data
structures - like vendor drivers, u386mon, fas, and so on will
have difficulties.

This one deserves to be in the FAQ, so I've added it.

In general, previous binaries will run unchanged on OSR5.  The
exceptions tend to be those which attempt to dig through system
internals, such as programs which read directory entries or
inodes directly or those which fish through kernel memory looking
for things which may have been changed in OSR5, or those which
have been coded with assumptions which are no longer valid (e.g.
"an inode is never larger than 16 bits so I'll keep track of inodes
with 16-bit unsigned integer variables").

Technically, the OS does run these programs, too; it's the
programs themselves which don't work, not that the OS can't run
them.

1. Is solaris 2.4 x86 binary compatible to generic SVR4/386?

I'm considering an `upgrade' from Esix 4.0.4 to Solaris 2.4. Are these
Systems *binary* compatible for simple applications (e.g. only libc, libsocket
..., NOT libX..) ?
