clients locking up

clients locking up

I'm having a little problem, I'm running two servers a NT 3.51 server
, and a SCO 4.2 server, everyone using win3.11 or win95 clients to log
into the NT server.  Then they use tiny term to get to the unix box
through tcp/ip.  there are also some workstations using straight
serial to talk to the unix box.  for some reason every once in a while
the clients accessing the unix box through a tcp/ip connection over
the lan are locking up all at the same time, while the clients on a
serial connection are not.  The only clue I'm getting as to the reason
is an error

warning cet: unit 0 adapter check interupt 00180005!

interface 0 in slot 7 has failed, trying to restart.

then later I get

notice: cet: unit 0 restarted successfllly.

I'v figured out that unit 0 slot 7 is my NIC card, but I don't know
how to fix the problem.

Any suggestions are apreciated.

by the way only the win 3.11 clients are locking up.

Hi !

I've been able to gather the following info from the SCO's IT
database. Please notice that this is not 100% related to the
problem you're facing but give it a try.

=== cut here ===

Warning: cet0: adapter check interrupt: Interface ## in slot ## failed

KEYWORDS: jia v4 compaq proliant 1000 2000 4000 netflexII packet blaster
/usr/lib/compaq/cet0/.info texas instruments Driver.o Driver.fpa new hang system
network cet0 adapter check interrupt interface slot failed efs 1.7 uniethf.bin unieth.bin

RELEASE:  SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.2
          SCO Open Desktop Release 3.0
          Compaq EFS 1.7

PROBLEM:  My network or system is* with the following error:

Warning: cet0: adapter check interrupt: Interface ## in slot ## has
          failed Status 904 r1300000a0 r140000e934 r150000800f

The Packet Blaster(TM) chip on the NetFlexII card is receiving bad
(oversize) frames.  This may be an indication of a hardware problem
somewhere else on the network (in other words, a faulty concentrator
          or router).

SOLUTION: See Section I for an interim workaround.  For a permanent fix, a new
NetFlexII driver is available from SCO Support.

Section II, below, details the driver replacement instructions.

NOTE: This will not stop the generation of oversize frames on the
network, it will merely tell the NetFlexII card to ignore them.

          Section I. Workaround
          ---------------------

          (1) cd /usr/lib/compaq/cet
          (2) vi .info
          (3) Search for "cpq6101", you should see the following lines:

              board-id cpq6101
                      medium ethernet
                              mode fpa uniethf.bin
                              mode normal unieth.bin
                              mode promiscuous uniethp.bin
                      medium token-ring

          (4) Swap the lines that contain references to the files 'uniethf.bin'
              and 'unieth.bin':

              board-id cpq6101
                      medium ethernet
mode normal unieth.bin # Swap these two lines so
mode fpa uniethf.bin   # the unieth.bin is first.
                              mode promiscuous uniethp.bin
                      medium token-ring

          (5) Shutdown and reboot the system.

Upon reboot, microcode will be loaded to the NetFlexII card that
will turn off the packet blasting capability and, in effect, make
the NetFlexII card a NetFlex card.

          Section II: Driver Replacement Instructions
          --------------------------------------------

          (1) If you performed the workaround from Section I, undo it.

          (2) Extract the Driver.fpa.Z file from the Support supplied diskette
              or archive.

          (3) Uncompress the resultant Driver.fpa.Z file:

              # uncompress Driver.fpa.Z

          (4) Back up the original cet Driver.o files:

              # cd /etc/conf/pack.d/cet
              # cp Driver.o Driver.o.org

              (If there's a Driver.a in /etc/conf/pack.d/cet, move it out
               of the way:

              # mv Driver.a Driver.a.org)

              # cd /usr/lib/compaq/cet
              # cp Driver.o Driver.o.org

          (4) Rename Driver.fpa to Driver.o and copy it to the Link kit and
              the Compaq library:

              # mv Driver.fpa Driver.o
              # cp Driver.o /etc/conf/pack.d/cet/Driver.o
              # cp Driver.o /usr/lib/compaq/cet/Driver.o

          Relink the kernel:

           # cd /etc/conf/cf.d
           # ./link_unix -y

          Reboot the system.

The board and driver will no longer react adversely to illegal
(oversize) frames on the wire.  They will simply be ignored.

Hope this helps !

Best,
Roberto
