UUCP email to the Internet & SMTP

UUCP email to the Internet & SMTP

Post by Jim Pazaren » Sun, 18 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I have a UUCP account with a long distance ISP. My email flows peacefully
in this configuration and has for a couple years. Unfortunately, with the
flow I have of various newsgroups, my long distance bill runs about
$70/month. This is *not* economical.

Locally, there is a POP to a different ISP. I actually have a personal account
with them because of the non long distance. They do not offer UUCP accounts.
The local POP is %ppp *only*. When I require WEB access I use the local POP
and windoze. I have never attempted to connect my SCO v5.0 to them via %ppp,
however I am sure that I could because the procedure has been well documented
in this newsgroup on several occasions.

My question is .. Can my email batch up to go thru the local POP and %ppp in
a similar fashion to the UUCP which I currently transfer via long distance tel?
If it can, what do I ask for from the local POP, and what do I have to alter
in my own configuration?

My guess for my internal setup is to route my badhosts thru the correct smtp
channel rather than the present uucp channel. What do I ask the POP Tech
Support for, so that I at least *sound* like I know what I am talking about?

TIA

Why not just use uucp over tcp? Bring up your ppp link, then do like before.
Of course you could send out your mail over smtp while the link is up.

1. Need help with EMail/SMTP/NNTP/UUCP!

Hello....

First a big THANK YOU to everyone who replied via EMail to my
question about displaying a screen prior to a Telnet Login!
I set up an issue.net and it works perfectly!  My BBS will
  be TELNET'able next week....

I'm running a PCBoard BBS and am current dialing in using
PCB's UUCP interface for inbound and outbound EMail....

I get 5000 newsgroups off a satellite dish and send messages
  out via my UUCP connection.

I plan to terminate my UUCP account once my SLIP line is ready.

I have set up a LINUX system to connect via SLIP - the BBS is
running on OS/2 machines running IBM's TCP/IP.  I am running
Ray Gwinn's VModem and redirect incoming TELNET sessions to
the BBS on the OS/2 box - its working flawlessly....

I was told that my inbound EMail could be sent to my LINUX box
via SMTP or NNTP.  I was told that I could send my outbound
EMail and newsgroups in the same fashion.

I should mention that my only connection to the outside world
is on the LINUX box, the rest of the machines are a local network.

I'm a bit confused here.... What needs to be done to set this
up?  What's the best setup for inbound EMail, and what is the
best way to get it over to PCB so my UUCP tosser can toss the
  messages to the BBS?

Does inbound EMail sent via SMTP or NNTP come in a different format
than UUCP?  I've got the structures for the PCB message areas, if
need be I could write a utility to toss the mail to PCB, are
the message structures available if the format is indeed different
  than UUCP?

The same questions apply to my outbound mail, messages written
on PCB, whether EMail, or outbound newsgroups will be tossed from
the PCB message areas with the UUOUT utility.  I can get these
messages over to the LINUX box without much difficulty, but HOW
do I send them out using SMTP or NNTP?

I'm very new at using any type of UNIX environment - this is all
new to me, an I would really appreciate any assistance... What's
the best way for me to go?

Thanks again!  You guys have been a GREAT help!
