need help to install fro EIDE/ATAPI CDROM drive

Post by Adam Dean Lipsiu » Fri, 16 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Please bear with me as this is my first attempt at any kind of UNIX
environment -
I have worked with NT and with Netware, but UNIX is altogether different
for me....

I am trying to install SCO 5.0.4 from an EIDE/ATAPI CDROM drive.

The hardware is:
    CPU:                       AMD 586 133mhz
    RAM:                     12 MEG
HARD DRIVES:    WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR 540 MEG [2 of them]
both on Primary IDE controller, one as
master, on as slave

CDROM:               MITSUMI 8x [uses toshiba/sanyo driver in DOS or
Win95]
on Secondary IDE controller as master
[controller is at IRQ 11, I/O addr
0170h]
VIDEO:               Paradise SVGA w/512k [8-bit card]

NIC:                    Linksys 10 mbps Ethernet [NE2000 compatible]

                                [set for IRQ 5, I/O addr 0300h]

I have previously installed on [and removed each from] this machine
Win3.1/Dos, Win95,
WinNT 3.51 Server, Win NT 4.0 Server, and Netware 3.11 and 4.0, so I
know the
hardware works. I tried to install Yggdrasil Plus-and-Play Linux, but I
could not get the X-Window
GIU to run properly.

I have of course rtfm, but when I try to link the ATAPI from the BTLD
disk, I get an error that says that
it cannot locate the specified module.

If anyone has done this successfully, I would appreciate knowing what
sting you have passed at the BOOT: prompt
to link the ATAPI BTLD, and which version of the BTLD or supplement disk
from SCO were you using.

I have looked at the SCO www site and found some info about downloading
disk images, but it is unclear how to
create a Unix disk image from a Dos or Win95 machine. Again - any input
would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks in advance for helping me with my 'baby steps'  in the Unix
world.

Please copy your reply via email as I do not get to the newsgroups too
often [I hope that will change].

Not that I can help you with it.... but I came further than you in
installing...
I have an ATAPI Cd-rom and a WD 325 meg HD both on primary controller...

I used the following bootstring:

Boot: defbootstr ahslink=ATAPI Srom=(0,1,0,0)

SCO Will try to emulate SCSI by replacing the wd driver... the Srom
parameters are as follows

1st: 0 for primary controller, 1 for secondary
2nd: 0 for master, 1 for slave
3th and 4th always 0 with ATAPI drives....

It will then load the driver from the supplement disk, but I cannot get
any further than the Installation media selection... I'd like some help
too

thanx

Linking the "ATAPI" driver is for 5.0.0 and 5.0.2.  It is not for 5.0.4.
Under 5.0.4 it should auto detect the drive.  What version are you running?

The original poster was talking about OpenServer Release 5.0.4.  You
didn't state.  If you're using 5.0.4, you certainly should *not* be
using a BTLD.  If you're using 5.0.0 or 5.0.2, you should be using
oss451b, in which case the BTLD name is "wd".  The name you're using,
"ATAPI", comes from the original 5.0.0c release supplement / BTLD disk.
Don't use that.  Do state your version number in the future.
