Can't install SCO using Funai CD-ROM drive

Post by jedim.. » Thu, 30 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to install SCO using a Funai CD-ROM drive model #E2650UA
and receive the following error numerous times on the screen:

Srom MODESENSE waiting

SCSI CD-ROM 0 dev 51/0 (ha=1 id=0 lun=0) block 98
Drive not ready: being loaded
Status (something)=D1 target=01 key: 02 04 01

Any ideas?  Is the drive compatible?

Thanks!

By searching the web a bit, I determined that this is a 6x speed ATAPI
CD-ROM.

Given that, the messages definitely suggest that the drive is not
compatible.  It could also be a problem with the IDE controller (e.g.
the BIOS may be programming it for an unusable PIO mode).

Three things you could try:

  1. In BIOS setup, see if you have per-unit control of PIO modes.  If
so, set the CD-ROM to a slower PIO mode (go to 0).

  2. Move it from its current seconday/master position to primary/slave.
This may convince your BIOS to program it for a better PIO mode.

  3. Try the latest OpenServer IDE driver, oss451a (see
     ftp://ftp.sco.com/SLS/.)

If it still doesn't work in the primary/slave position and using the
latest driver, then it really is incompatible.

Hi !

Not a great HW techie here however here are my
2 cents ;->

First, double check the SCSI cable to make sure that
it's correctly terminated; also, SCSI cables have their
own specifics which should be respected (you can
look for SCSI specs by pointing your browser at
www.yahoo.com and by supplying the SCSI spec
words - I know I'm pointless here but I do have
downloaded 'em but I'm unable to presently find 'em).

Please change your CD-ROM scsi-id to 5; this is
the value that SCO's OSe use by default.

Never heard of a Funai CD-ROM so I can't tell you
(from experience) if this model is supported or not.

Next time, please post your current HW specs so
we can guess what could probably go wrong
with your system.

Best,
Roberto
