DEFBOOTSTR=dos should this allow dos to boot by default?

Post by Chris Rap » Sat, 09 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I am running Free SCO OS5 and want dos to boot by default from the
Boot: prompt.

I have set DEFBOOTSTR=dos in /etc/default/boot but when the machine
auto boots it just comes up:

hd(40)dos: invalid parameter

What else do I need to set?

Thanks
Chris R.

Read the man pages for boot(F), boot(HW), and bootos(HW).

The following works just fine.  (I tried it).

        DEFBOOTSTR=bootos dos
        # DEFBOOTSTR=hd(40)unix swap=hd(41) dump=hd(41) root=hd(42)

I would think that your method should have worked since
/stand/dos and /stand/bootos are linked.  Wierd, but true.

Thanks David

I thought I was going mad there for a minute!  :-)

I was _sure_ there used to be no problem auto-booting to DOS but the
OS5 just won't do it.

I suppose we will have to wait for an upgrade or patch :-(

Thanks

There is a bug in that you cannot autoboot to dos, (it can't take the
"auto" suffix), Bela knows about and suggested I try the old OSR3 dos
file, but it does not recognise my DOS_32 Win 95 partition.

Chris*r blessed us with his opinion of the following..

It can't do it that way, because it's trying to send dos a parameter of
"auto" for autoboot & dos doesn't like that. I haven't seen a way to make it
work otherwise.

1. Lilo boot won't allow DOS to boot

I just upgraded my kernel to v1.0 from 0.99.14.

Did the usual make config,
Did the usual make config,
              make dep
              make clean
              make

I followed the v1.0 kernel installation instructions and now I cannot load
DOS when I turn on my computer.  I do not know what all the commands do
(pretty dangerous :)) but when I rdev it says => /dev/hda2.

 /dev/hda1 = DOS partition
 /dev/hda2 = Linux fs
 /dev/hda2 = Linux fs
 /dev/hda2 = linux swap.

I cannot seem to change the filesystem back to dos, even when I boot dos
from my a: drive and use fdisk.  I really do not want to dump the Linux fs
and start from scratch.

I have all the HOW documents but maybe I have missed the right one.
Can anybody tell me what's up?
