Problem using doscp on new Pentium 166 SCO 3.2v4.2

Post by Selwyn Rosenstei » Tue, 13 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I have just installed a new Pentium 166 using the Intel Aurora (32 bit)
motherboard, 64MB RAM, DPT 2124 Fast Wide SCSI Host Adapter with 16MB
cache, 2 Digi PC/Xe Boards and have also installed TCP/IP newest version
just bought. OS is SCO Unix 3.2v4.2, disks = 2GB, 1GB & 2GB, all SCSI.

Everything seems to work fine except for doscp.  Tar has no problem,
Microlite has no problem, to/from either floppy or tape, just doscp.

The problem is:  When coping files to/from the 3.5" floppy drive using
doscp the system hangs.  Not every time, just most times.  I can make it
hang by using doscp and while it is copying, pressing Alt-F2 or switching
to any other screen.  It also seems to hang when other people use the
system while the doscp is in operation.

I have tried not using the floppy controller built into the motherboard
by adding an ISA floppy controller (IDE card with all except floppy
disabled), but it did the same thing.

Any suggestions would be of a great help.

Thanks in advance for the help.

$The problem is:  When coping files to/from the 3.5" floppy drive using

$system while the doscp is in operation.

The _system_ hangs?  As in, no users' sessions respond to input,
no disk activity, keyboard LEDs don't work, doesn't respond to ping?

That sounds like hardware, though I don't know why it would show
up only when using doscp and not other utilities which read and write
floppies.  Then again, doscp tends to do its job painfully slowly,
and probably has rather different access patterns than most other
utilities.

You've replaced the floppy controller.  Have you tried replacing
the _drive_?

I have to admit, this sure looks like a weird problem ... good luck!

1. Dual 120 Pentium vs. Single 166 Pentium

Hi!

Well, the subject says it all ;)

I=B4m about to buy a more modern computer after christmas and =

just wanted to ask what would be better, a quite expensive
166 mhz (or 200 if intel drops the prices when they release
the MMX) or a dual 100/120? =

Is the Linux SMP code good?

What about those applications:

GNU CC

Povray

X

Mesa

???

Thanks ;)
