Changing Serial Nos using 'brand'

Changing Serial Nos using 'brand'

Post by Ray Fallo » Sat, 20 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hi all,

I'm involved in using one machine to install SCO unix on hot swappable
disks. In order to do this I need change the serial number of a machine
so that each machine can have a unique ID. The disk will then be
installed on a new machine and the serial number will identify the
machine with the serial ID.

What are the files that need to be "brand"ed in order to change the
serial number/activation key pairing ?
Tried files in /etc/perms plus /etc/perms/bundle to no avail.
Using "uname -X" to see current serial number - is this the correct
command?

I'd appreciate if someone could get back to me on this one ...

Thanks in advance ...

Ray,

Why don't you just run /etc/serialize <permsfile>.

        Usage:  /etc/serialize <permsfile>
        <permsfile> is the permissions file (e.g. /etc/perms/rtsmd)
that contains a list of files to be serialized.

This is easier than running brand on the files contained in the 'ser=' line.

We regulary use the serialize command.  The question, SCO has told
us that you can only run `serialize' once ever on a package.  Is
this true?  And if so, why?

There is a known problem if /tmp/<product_name>.ser exists - basically
/etc/serialize will not prompt for a serialno/activation key, it will
use what it finds in this file. Solution is to check /tmp before
issuing this command.

1. Can't change 'coredumpsize' to 'unlimited'

I am trying to debug an application program with its core file, but
it never dumps a core when it crashes since coredumpsize is set to 0.
The following is the output of 'limit' command.
(I'm using csh and running Solaris 7 SPARC.)

## start of log ##
cputime         unlimited
filesize        unlimited
datasize        unlimited
stacksize       8192 kbytes
coredumpsize    0 kbytes
descriptors     65536
memorysize      unlimited
## end of log ##

After reading 'man limit', I've made some attemps, but coredumpsize
doesn't change to another value other than zero.

I tried 'unlimit coredumpsize'.  No error.  No change in coredumpsize;

I tried 'limit coredumpsize unlimited'.  No error.  No change in coredumpsize.

I tried 'limit coredumpsize x', where 'x' equals to some integer value.
"limit: coredumpsize: Can't set limit" was the result.
No change in coredumpsize.

I have enough disk space.
I tried all of the above after becoming root and with -h option,
and still I wasn't able to change the coredumpsize.

What else should I try to change it?
Any ideas or criticisms are welcome.  Thank you in advance.
