Lone-Tar Errors ==> OSR5.0.2 fs errors?

Post by Lucky Leavel » Sun, 13 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I have a client running OSr502 with fairly new hardware who has a
persistent problem with file errors usually detected (but not caused) by
Lone-Tar.  For example, their nightly master backups have been failing
with the following error:

    21070:lone-tar: cannot find
/opt/K/SCO/Unix/5.0.2Dp/.softmgmt/var/etc/conf/node.d/c 0
sysin;28003 because ...No such device or address (error 6)

In addition their are two unresolved links errors:

    56409:lone-tar:Unresolved links to ./vfs11.tar
    56410:lone-tar:Unresolved links to
./opt/K/SCO/MMDF/2.43.1j/etc/sysadm.d/mail/desktop/config.obj/c/title#

If I cd to the first one (.../etc/conf/node.d), the directory node.d
shows up when I am in its parent (.../etc/conf) but when I try to (l)ist
the files while in that directory, I get an error:

l:cannot get current working directory:No such file or directory
    (error 2)

A pwd command at this point outputs a blank line. (I have seen this error
on my OSr5.0.0 system as well.)

When they encountered a similar problem about a month ago, we restored
the root fs from an APril 25 backup due to several such files being missing.
I did not recreate the root fs at that time; perhaps I should have.
Lone-Tar tech support at that time helped us isolate the problem to a
fried Digiboard which we physically removed along with the Digi drivers
(first via Digi mpi, then thru custom).

They have had a history of severe power fluctuations but their SCO system
is on a nearly new APC unit which is interfaced for automatic shutdowns.
(The Digi was fried by a surge received thru an attached Wyse terminal
that was severe enough to melt insulation on that line.)

The Software Manager shows:

        OSR5.0.2c (Enterprise)
        AHS5.2
        oss436a
        oss437a
        oss440a
        oss441a

Got any ideas?  Are their any additional patches we should apply?
Upgrade to OSr5.0.4?

Thank you,
Lucky

I occasionally get a similar error (No such device or
address) but it goes away if I change the tape.  I did not
know what caused it, so I threw away that tape and all
works again.

Worked for me.

1. Lone-Tar Backup Errors ==> OSR5.0.2 Problems

Not yet.  I don't have anuthing to swap just yet.  When we do, we'll
probably go ahead and upgrade them to OSR5.0.4.

oss438a is the Symbolic Link and Long File Name Supplement which
"corrects a problem with accessing symlinks whose link contents are
exactly 128 characters long. The error when opening such a file is:

cannot open <filename>: No such file or directory (error 2).
