Windows in SCO ODT 3.0 and SCO 5

Post by Eigil Krogh Sorene » Fri, 12 Jan 1996 04:00:00

We are just now making client programmes that runs on PC's running
Windows x and has a SCO UNIX system as server (e.g. DB server).

These programmes we would like to also use unchanged in the Windows
"box".

My question is how far it is possible to regard the Windows "box" in the
ODT as being a Windows running on a remote PC.

Is it e.g. possible to let the programmes running in the Windows "box"
communicate with the SCO UNIX via a tcp/ip connection ? The reason we
need that is that we are using ODBC in the windows client programmes. If
it is possible how is it then done ?

Now we are using SCO ODT 3.0. In the near future we are going to use
SCO 5. Dows Windows run in the same way on these two systems or are
there many differences we should be aware of ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Eigil !

As fas as I know, the DOS emulator under SCO DOT 3.0 does not allow you to
use Winsock TCP/IP connections or to configure TCP/IP operating under the
sessions itself (well, to tell the truth, I succeded - a while ago - in
configuring PC/TCP [a DOS TCP/IP package] under SCO Merge but first I had
to disable the SCO TCP/IP subsystem in order to get it functioning as
expected). I've been told (from the 'Net) that the new version of SCO
MERGE (3.2.2 i ***think***), available under SCO OS5 will allow you to do
that. In addition, please consider the WABI package (available under Open
Server 5) which allows you to run a (restricted for the moment - 24 of the
most used Windows apps have been tested and certified by SCO but this
doesn't means that yours won't run) number of Windows applications under
an UNIX emulation of MSWindows running in protected mode (this feature is
also available it the last version of MERGE - again, from what I've been
told since I don't have it under hand now) and with WINSOCK support which
works with the TCP/IP embedded in the SCO OS.

I'd suggest you to ask SCO if they have some "limited in time" licenses of
SCO Open Server 5 (and I'm pretty sure they have) and to try your apps
under this environment in order to fully test if this OS can fulfill your
expectations.

Regards,
Roberto

3.2.2 does support winsock.

I have seen it with my own eyes now.

I must say, I am still just STARTING to configure Merge 3.2.2, and I have
been ****EXTREMELY**** impressed so far (with the exception of the
serial terminal problem I am seeking to solve- see my other post, still
in need of help).

The speed of MS-Windows in Merge 3.2.2 has to been seen to believed.  Even
on a slow monochrome Xterminal, it is impressive (mono support!!!).  On
a fast (IE- modern) color Xterminal, it is truely a work of art... I just
impressed my CEO today with it.

OS-5 & Merge 3.2.2: so far, I have found nothing which will not run... but I
am just starting.....

Web site but I evidetally haven't found the right page yet.

What are these tested aps?

Hi Bill !

The following list comes directly from SCO. Hope it helps !

SCO Wabi Release 2.0 supports 24 popular Windows applications:

                Intuit Quicken 3.0
                Lotus Approach(tm) 2.1
                Lotus cc:Mail(tm) 2.0
                Lotus *(tm) 2.01
                Lotus Notes(r) 3.0c
                Lotus Organizer(tm) 1.1
                Microsoft(r) Access 2.0
                Microsoft(r) Mail 3.2
                Lotus SmartSuite(tm) 2.0
                Microsoft(r) Office 4.3
                Aldus(r) PageMaker(r) 4.0, 5.0
                CorelDraw(tm) 3.0, 4.0
                Harvard Graphics(r) for Windows 1.0, 2.0
                Lotus AmiPro(tm) for Windows 3.0, 3.01
                Lotus 1-2-3(r) for Windows 1.1, 4.0
                Microsoft Excel(r) for Windows 4.0, 5.0
                Microsoft PowerPoint(r) 3.0, 4.0
                Microsoft(r) Windows 3.11
                Microsoft Word(r) for Windows 2.0, 6.0
                ProComm Plus(tm) for Windows 1.0, 1.02
                Microsoft Project(tm) for Windows 3.0, 4.0
                Borland Paradox(tm) for Windows 1.0, 4.5
                Borland Quattro(r) Pro for Windows 1.0, 5.0
                WordPerfect(r) for Windows 5.2, 6.0a.

NOTE: Applications other than those listed may work with the
SCO Wabi program if they conform to Microsoft Windows 3.1
application program interface conventions. Lack of inclusion
in this list means that an application has not been tested for
compatibility with the SCO Wabi program.

Roberto

[snip]

I don't know ... I never tried it, mainly because I don't have the above
mentioned Borland stuff :-(. If this beast produces code which is fully
compatible with Win 3.1, then it *****should***** work.
