dns/files resolution

Post by Eamon Da » Wed, 10 Jan 1996 04:00:00

I'd presumed that SCO 5.0 resolves domain names by
checking its /etc files and then dns, but a recent
nameserver outage proved me wrong.  All of the SCO
boxes on the  network  ignored the names  in their
hosts files and refused to resolve any machines on
the local subnet.  Is there something I  should be
setting  explicitly so  that it  will  check these
files, as in Solaris' nsswitch.conf?

in /etc/resolv.conf add:

hostresorder local bind

hostresorder bind local

depending on your preferred ordering.

I think it bears repeating that this will only work in OS5, not earlier
SCO versions....

1. DNS resolution

I have recently installed a BSD 20 machine but I cannot get it to find a
machine by hostname.

unless I put the name in the /etc/hosts when I try to run named of course
the host file is ignored but I can then no longer telnet to the machine
at all.

I am editing the named.boot file and resolv.conf file I have a machine on
the same network that has no problems at all with DNS copying the files
across does not work at all even though there does not seem to be any
machine specific entries in them .

any suggestions on what files I should be looking at
and what I should do with them.

I have rfc 1033 - 1035 but I am frankly terrified of embarking on that
reading journy some 130 a4 pages
