Holly CRAP!!!

Is there anything else available than "the gimp"
for say drawing pixmaps, icons, etc...

I gave the gimp a try, but coming from CAD/CAM
background I quickly gave up...

Gimp is NOT a cad/cam style program, but a graphic arts prog. You might
want to try searching for "cad" at www.freshmeat.net. I think you will
find quite a few packages, including Cycas and others.

you could always use MS paint!!!

--The above statement was a joke.  Just nod and smile.

I haven't a clue on how to use gimp either.  I have to resort to the
elementary programs once and a while, like windows and paint.

How about "xpaint", "dia", "xfig"?

Hey there is plenty of tutorials for the gimp, it's gotta
be the best graphics app out there.

I love the gimp for image processing.  My only suggestion is that someone
write the plugins to take advantage of multiprocessing or multithreaded
systems.  I have a four processor SUN box and the plugins do everything
sequentially.  It would scream if the image transform routines were written
to take advantage of multiple processors.
