HELP! (newbie needs help installing SLS)

Post by Simur » Wed, 03 Mar 1993 03:30:12

Okay, I was installing SLS this weekend and had some minor (read severe in
my opinion) problems.  the command "doinstall /dev/hda 49171" which SHOULD
work to install the system worked a total of 3/4 of one time.  It did a
75% installation of the a and b series disks (meaning a bunch of the
commands that are the reason I installed the b disks didn't work).  so I
reformatted the partition and the boot disk it created and tried again.
it said something along the lines of insert disk a2 in floppy drive and
press any key.  when I pressed the anykey (because disk a2 WAS in the
drive) it gave the same prompt a couple of times and then tried to create
a boot disk....  any suggestions?

also- If I ever get this running, I want to be able to boot linux, so
could someone PLEASE define bootimage and rootimage (I mean besides the
obvious definition i.e. telling me where to get these images) and give me
a basic idea as how to install LILO (the README didn't help much...)

I would be surprised if that worked, ever.  It clearly states in the
README examples like the following.

        doinstall /dev/hda1

1. Need help installing SLS 0.99pl6...

I recently downloaded SLS 0.99pl6 and it installed fine on my
486-66 with an Adaptec SCSI controller/hd.  It also installed fine
on my friend's 486-50 with Bustech SCSI and IDE controllers/hds.  But
now its having problems on my friend's 386-33 with IDE controller/hd.

Disks A1 and A2 work fine, and fdisk and mke2fs work as expected
(100 meg Linux partition with Linux extfs).  Then I type doinstall
/dev/hda2 and it asks for disk A2 (already in drive).  A2 installs
fine and it asks for A3.  Upon inserting disk A3 and pressing enter, I get

MINIX-fs magic match failed
[MS-DOS F5 Rel. alpha.8, FAT 12, check=n, conv=b, uid=0, gid=0, umask=000]
[me=0xf0, cs=1, #f=2, fs=1, f1=9, ds=19, de=224, data=33, se=2880, ts=0]
Insert disk a4...

Note that it does not install any files off of disk a3 before
asking for disk a4.  It also will not install any files off of disk a4
and will then proceed with creating the boot floppy.  (This was a minimal
installation.)

Any ideas or comments on this problem will be greatly appreciated.
