Ok, I have Linux 0.95c root and 0.96a boot (I think those letters are right,
I'm not sure) I pretty much have a working system right now, gcc, g++, gnu
emacs, man pages, adduser, ... However, I have never applied a patch to
anything and I don't even have the source code for the Kernel. My question
is how important is it to have the source, apply the patches, etc. I tried
to compile ps yesterday, and it was looking for things that I don't have, ie
it was looking for Linux source I assume, but I can live with out ps for
now as things work fairly well now. What I'm wondering now, though, is what
happens when new releases come out? I've seen a 0.96a root/boot whatever,
is it easier to get new copies of the compiled kernel, or to apply the patches
and recompile???
Also, I cannot get pcomm or xcomm to work at all. Everything looks like it
should work, but I never hear a dial tone, or anything. I've read every
FAQ.serial/letter/etc. and I set the minor/major numbers and I've even tried
other com ports, but nothing seems to help. One thing though, I'm using an
internal modem configured as com3, has anyone else had a problem with
internal modems???
Other than that I am very happy with this system!!! I have a 60 meg Dos/60
meg Linux system. I only use the Dos part to d/l stuff for Linux, or
to do homework. I'd rather do my homework on Linux, but I haven't seen
Akcl yet. Does anyone know where the source is, if someone tells me where
to get it, I'll try a port. (Although I guess I'll have to learn about
diff/patch first :D )
