Pioneer 24X CD-ROM Crashed Linux! Help!

Post by James Jefferso » Sun, 23 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hello everyone....

I upgraded my 2X IDE cdrom to this new 24X Pioneer IDE deal - but,
everything I try to access it
it walls to all screens saying that hdb is having a timeout... Also I
cannot bring the system
down while it is timming out. (I've let it run for a couple of hours and
it doesn't give up)...

The motherboard is a Intel Trinton, but the bug fix is compiled in...
The kernel is 2.0.32, but
it has done the same thing under 2.0.30 and 2.0.31.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

Pioneer 24X CD-ROM Crashed Linux! Help!

First of all, you didn't give enough information. Several things could be
happening. I'll address them one at a time.

1. Is your CD-ROM on the secondary controller? If so, you should be trying

to mount /dev/hdc, not /dev/hdb. Unless of course, you have it set up as a
slave, then it would be hdd.

2. If you are running it as a slave off the first controller, make sure
that you have your jumpers set properly on the CD-ROM AND the hard disk...

Good luck...let me know how it turns out.

Pioneer 24X CD-ROM Crashed Linux! Help!

It might seem a little strange, but the faster CR-Roms
have (in my experience) taken a bit longer to get the disk up to spin.

I get better spin-up times with my 8x CDRom than
with my 16x.

Yeah, the 16x transfers a lot faster, but it sometimes takes up to THREE
TIMES AS LONG to access the data the first time. This has caused
some timeouts on my system.

I can only imagine what a 24x CDRom must perform
like...

Remember: Faster doesn't always mean better.
