Documentation on using Athena widget set

Post by Pratip Mukherj » Fri, 07 Aug 1992 16:51:55

Hello,
I am trying to learn programming with X11. The X11 available on Linux seems
to be having only 'Athena' widget-set, and the release does not have any
document about how to use it. Is there any downloadable document on this widget
available on any ftp site?. Is there any book available describing the use of
this widget set?. Is Motif (for which I have a book) available on Linux?.

Thanks in advance for any pointer.

Athena is included with the X11 sources. Motif is sold by the OSF. A source
license is $2000 (that number might have changed). A binary only license is
$40. If someone here has source for Motif and can compile it then they can
sell it to you for $40.

With the X11 sources is a doc directory which has the Athena widget documents.

When I get a computer which can run X (not _to_ far away) I'd be most
interested in having Motif libs and window manager for just $40.

This is _not_ true.
1. The $2000 license is limited - you can distribute binaries in-house only.
   Full distribution license is $15000.
2. There is no binary license available from OSF. Many resellers (who have
paid their $15000), do recompile Motif for various platforms, and sell
binaries. They pay OSF $40 and charge you $300 or so. I doubt you'll find
   one for linux : *<

This information is 1 month old and was obtained from Kathie Parsons of OSF.
For further info you may want to look in Motif-FAQ (comp.windows.x.motif), or
call OSF.

1. ONLINE documentation on how to use Athena widget set requested.

Anybody know where I can obtain some kind of tutorial on using the
Athena widget set on the 'net?  Also, a tutorial on XLib in general would be
great.

If not, are there books available on Athena?
