GCC 2.2.2 parse error before (

I've tried re-installing gcc 2.2.2 _exactly_ according to the instructions
in the README and other release docs but I keep getting 'parse' errors when
cc1 encounters the first '(' in a header file, or in a program consisting
of just:

        main()
        {
        }

I'm running 0.96c compiled with gcc 2.1.1c - anyone else having problems
getting 2.2.2 to run ??  I got the gcc2.2.2 files from the mirror of funet
here at ic.doc.
