Linux SMP: Running Single Processor

Linux SMP: Running Single Processor

Is is possible to tell a Linux SMP kernel to run only one processor,
ie. be able to switch from single-processor to multi-processor without
having to reboot?  (One would like to also switch back to multi-processor mode.)

This would help greatly when isolating ptheads bugs and when
wanting to run applications with known SMP bugs.
