toshiba t4850ct linux installation

I'm trying to install Linux on my older Toshiba 486dx laptop.  I've got
it attatched to a docking station for cd-rom support.  The only distro
that I've been able to get installed is an old RH 5.1 that I had laying
around. The problem is that I can't get the included version of X
working.  My WesternDigital video is supported, but everytime I "startx"
my screen turns bright white and can only be recovered by a 3 finger
salute.  I've entered my display panel settings manually as according to
the documentation that came with my laptop.  I tried installing a later
distro, but they all crash during the copying of the rpms.  I've tried
Suse 7.0, Mandrake 6.0 and Suse 5.3.

Oh, I can start the X server using GenericVGA, but my max resolution is
320x?? and it's impossible to use/see.

Dennis, can we assume you've already run XF86Setup?

When I have x troubles, I always do(in this order):

run:    XF86Setup(graphical x configure)
run:    xf86config(text based x configure)
edit:   /etc/XF86Config

I've often found that the x conifigure programs are not writing to the
/etc/XF86Config file correctly.

It sounds as if linux is unaware of your video card's video ram

good luck!

I finally got Mandrake 6.0 installed after much wailing and nashing of
teeth.  I cut and pasted a XF86Config file from the web that someone had
success with on a Compaq with the same video chipset.

I have new problem however, one that I have been researching on the
search engines, but am not getting a definitive answer.

As I stated before this laptop is attatched to a docking station for
CD-rom support.  I get the following kernel messages:

hdc: IRQ probe failed (0)

hdc: lost interrupt

I can mount the CD-rom in linux, but not before I endure about 10 or 15
more "lost interrupts.

The controller I've got the cdrom attatched to is an old IDE future
domain cd-rom controller (it's NOT SCSI).  It doesn't have a chipset
that I recognize.

The primary controller is internal to the laptop of course.

They are set at irq14 and 15.

Thanks,

Dennis

1. Linux on Toshiba T4850CT laptop

I'm having a hell of a time installing Linux on this toshiba laptop.
The RH5.0 install images don't like the cdrom, ethernet cards, etc.  I
installed it all quickly on my generic pc, but how does one deal with a
laptop?

Any help is appreciated!
