Hi Glen,

as a newbie myself, I think I may have come across the same problem as you
have. Set your modem connect speed to something a little slower than it is
currently set and see if you get better connects. I've set mine to <ugh> 38400
and I now connect 100% of the time.

Regards,

- Mark.

This looks like your provider is an intelligent one and doesn't allow
root dialup.

?? This makes no sense. The other side has no idea what you are when you
dial up ( and all Win machines are root dialups, so if they did not
allow it, they would lose 90% of their customers.)

The PAM comment comes from his computer, not the ISPs computer. I do not
know what is going on there either.

Not enough info here.

There is not enough info in the posted stuff to know what is happening.
Set up debugging for pppd.
Or did you terminate the connection 50 sec after it set itself up.

ppp connection fails

It appears that the connection is being established. At least, I assume that
when pppd reports bytes sent and received it needs a connection before it
can do that. Have you used the ppp option to establish a default route over
the ppp connection for applications? What is the output from "route -n" ?
