I've seen this question asked twice before but seen no answer:
X386 fails because it cant't find the 'fixed' font.
The server reports the font path as "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
but in Xconfig it is the real path "/usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
why!!!!???? I know this is a trivial problem.... but I don't know
what the fix is...

/usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/misc
The font map files are setup to assume that the fonts are compressed.

Just like it says in the subject line.
Just upgraded Debian to woody from potato (i.e., X 3.3.6 to 4.0.3)
Any ideas?
