?@SUBJECT:LILO, ps errors; UltraStor 34F related?

Greetings!
I haven't seen this problem posted before -- flame me if I've missed
something. :-)
I've had the following problem with installing LILO and apparently a
related one using "ps". Both are straight out of the SLS 1.02 distro.
My machine is a 486DX2/66, NICE EISA motherboard, AMI BIOS, 16MB
memory, external and internal caches turned off, UltraStor 34F SCSI
adapter, and a partridge in a pear tree.
Since I don't have another hard disk controller of any sort,
doesn't natively recognize the UltraStor 34F yet. <Sigh> So I've
been using the kernel found at
tsx-11.mit.edu:/pub/linux/ALPHA/scsi/Image.UltraStor, which btw needed
two bytes tweaked in the boot sector to allow it to _ask_ me for a
root disk. (It used to panic instead of asking.) Strange.
Anyway, the kernel is:
Here's what I see:
# cd /etc/lilo
# ./install
general protection: 0000
EIP: 0008:0002020A
EFLAGS: 00010202
fs: 0017
base: 00000000, limit: c0000000
Pid: 33, process nr: 8
e8 d5 5a ff f4 ff 20 07 ff ff
# ps
divide error: 0000
EIP: 0008:00040c62
EFLAGS: 00010286
fs: 0017
base: 00000000, limit: c0000000
Pid: 21, process nr: 7
f6 ff 20 07 fe ff 39 07 fe ff
These things have perplexed Michael Johnson, maintainer of the Linux
Meta-FAQ, as well as me. He's certain that the very same stuff in
/etc/lilo on my boot diskette works marvelously on his Linux box.
Any light folks could shed on this would be appreciated. In the mean
time I'll continue installing SLS diskettes by hand, snarf XS3, ....
