Lilo Error HELP plz??

Post by John » Tue, 18 Sep 2001 11:10:38

Hey,
Can anyone give me some help on this.  I'm trying to install slackware
8 on my new system (previous system was duel boot debian 2.1 and
win95).
When I attempt to setup lilo I get the error: geo_query_dev
HDIO_GETGEO (dev 0x1600): Invalid Argument.  As much info as I can
think of is
below, including precedure I am following when gettin this error.

Partion Info:

255 Head, 63 Sectors, 5005 Cylinders
Units = Cylinder of 16065 * 512 bytes

/dev/hda1 * 1 - 522 4192933+ (blocks) b (id) fat32 (w2k)
/dev/hda2   523 - 3964 27647865 (blocks) c (id) fat32 (LBA) (win prog)
/dev/hda3   3965 - 4398 3486105 (blocks) 83 (id) Linux Native (linux
system installed)
/dev/hda4   4399 - 4500 819315 (blocks) 82 (id) Linux Swap

Verify command = 8112887 unallocated sectors (I know... room left for
win9x if needed)

lilo.conf all - comments

lba32
boot = /dev/fd0
# OR /dev/hda3
delay = 50
vga = normal

image = /vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda3
label = Slackware
read-only

System Specs:

Gigabyte GA-7DXR Mobo
256x2 Micron ddr pc2100 ram
VisonTek Geforce 2 gts 64ddr
Intel modem (I know won't work with 2.4 kernal:( need new modem)
IBM DeskStarGV 40GB
Samsung Floppy
Creative pc-dvd x2
Yamaha Lightspeed 2 20x burner
Hec-350LD-T PS

Procedure followed.
boot from boot cd.
#mount -t ext2 /dev/hda3 /mnt
#lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf
< FD light comes on >
geo_query_dev HDIO_GETGEO (dev 0x1600): Invalid Argument.

I assume the dev 0x1600 is the hex code for the hda3 partion, or just
the hda drive itself that's being passed to the HDIO_GETGEO function.
(hard drie io .. Get Geometry I assume).  (just checkte dht souce HDIO
error code, geo_query_dev function).

Do I need to make hda3 bootable?  I would think that would pose a prob
as u can only have one bootable

Thanks for all help.  I am trying to get this duel booting by monday
when I start a class in linux.

TIA again

Currently you are attempting to install lilo to the floppy.

boot from CD or floppy

mount /dev/hda3 /mnt
edit the /mnt/etc/lilo.conf with your favorite text editor (vi, emacs, pico,
windows notepad  :-)

# *** lilo.conf ***

lba32
boot = /dev/hda3
map=/mnt/  'path to your map file' (for redhat- /boot/map but slackware,
???)
delay = 50
vga = normal

image = /mnt/vmlinuz
    root = /dev/hda3
    label = Slackware
    read-only

*** save the file ***

cd /mnt
./sbin/lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf

This should allow you to boot the /dev/hda3 if you are using win2k to boot
(read the HOWTO on that stuff).  If not, just change to boot=/dev/hda

If all goes well, then once you have booted into linux successfully, change
the /etc/lilo.conf file to reflect the path change (no longer
/mnt/[whatever] )

Lilo Error HELP plz??

Post by John » Tue, 18 Sep 2001 12:14:56

I try'd it out, no go.  Same error message.  (this is when attempting
to set lilo, not boot).  And ya, I know I was trying to install to
floppy. I had first tryed the superblock for hda3, (as I heard win Nt
doesn't like being loaded by lilo) then I heard otherwise, so planned
to put lilo on my mbr, but wanted to try on a floppy to boot w2k from
lilo before messing with the mbr.  (I got rid of the w2k label for now
till I get this working).  Same error message everywhere.
geo_query_dev HDIO_GETGEO (dev 0x1600): Invalid Argument.
That error sounds like it's trying to access the wrong hex id for the
partion.  I have no clue why though.  I checked the source, the error
is in responce to a call to ioctl returninga  negitive value (I assume
a error indicaion) and the invalid arg is the value of errno.   Any
ideas?

Try # 'ing out the 'lba32' line.  Also try 'linear'.

Another thing to do that I forgot initially --  Run lilo adding the '-v 5'
option and post the output here.

Thanks.  I did that last night, and was able to find the prob:)
Appently becuause it was booted off the cd, when I was running lilo it
was trying to 'cache' the current root (hdc) and in doing that trying
to get the drive geometry for the cdrom.  (dev 0x1600).  Wasn't liking
that very much:)  I booted from the boot: prompt to my hard drive, and
then lilo worked:) Duel boot up and running. Now to get my nvidia
drivers working:)
Thanks

Excellent.  I had a feeling it was pulling geometry from the wrong thing
(hence the fat32 and linear comment).

When I installed NVidia drivers many many months ago, it went smoothly.
Just follow the directions.
