I am running linux on an old compaq 386/20 portable w/ a 4-bit
VGA adapter, a VGA monitor, and a SMC Elite16 Combo (WD 8013) ethernet
card. I have read the NET-FAQ and fussed w/ the configuration files but
am still not able to connect w/ the network. I am on a 10Base-T ethernet
network connected to a hub which is connected to a thicknet backbone. I have
verified the integrity of the cable leading to the 386 w/ a Mac and the status
lights on it also verify its correct connection. When I attempt to ping any
location, it replies "ping: sendto: network unreachable, ret=-1" (this, by the
way, using numerical addresses; as far as named addresses, those don't work
at all). At any rate, this whole problem has me stumped, so if anyone has
any suggestions out there, I would appreciate it very much. You can post to
in advance for any help,
Jay Carlyle
