Webmin slow outside of network.

Post by Eric Vandervee » Fri, 27 Jun 2003 00:57:19

I am running webmin 1.090 on RedHat 9 and I am experiencing slow response
from webmin when I access it from outside of my network.  When I am in my
network it runs fine.

Any ideas what I could look for to whats causing this?
Thanks

Well I can upload to my server at fast speeds.  I am using a wireless cable
modem.

The MTU size on the outgoing side often is source of such problems.

Typically the outbound bandwidth on cable modems is capped.  Cox
communications typically caps at 20 which is really quite sluggish.  I have
the same problem with outbound on mine through Cox.  Uploading to your
server SHOULD be fast as this is really considered "inbound" traffic on the
server.

Well I am the ISP and I have uncapped this modem.  Its good to be the system
administrator. :)  Anyways I may have to loook deeper into this I just
notice it takes about 20 seconds longer to download the newsgroups off of
this site from work then from home.  Hmmmm...   If anybody still has had an
experience with something like this let me know.

As the sysadmin... you should now be doing speed diagnostics.  Poor mans
diagnostics, FTP to/from different known locations.  Do some tracerts to see
if you have a latency point.  Just because the cable modem is uncapped, is
there some router configurations that are preventing you from reaching full
potential?

Just some ideas.

1. Only ping to the ip outside outside our internal network under Redhat7.1

Dear all,

Redhat 6.0 is originally acts as our linux server.  Recently, we install
Red Hat 7.1 as our school server. The config is the same as that of the old
server. We can ping the ip outside our internal network. However, it is very
strange that the other services cannot work, e.g. it cannot connect to the
internet through Netscape, Mail server also cannot  work even for the
computers (using the outlook in Win98) in our internal network. But it can
send mail to the other clients by entering "mail somebody" at the server
computer.   Why? Note that DNS service does work because it can update the
data from the old server but  NFS service do not work. Please give some
advice, thanks.

Sincerely yours,
Simon
