New root-image and install package ...

Post by Martin Juni » Wed, 10 Jun 1992 18:50:28

Some days ago, I've compiled a new root disk and an easy to
install binaries package. For those who want to try it out, it is
available for anonymous ftp on
    ftp.dfv.rwth-aachen.de
in directory
    pub/linux/mj-bin
(Due to some severe problems in our FDDI network, the connection
will eventually break down. This is to be fixed in the next
days.)

The files are:

-rw-r--r--  1 mj            796 Jun  5 15:03 README
-rw-r--r--  1 mj           5366 Jun  5 16:03 INSTALL-0.96

Updated version of the INSTALL-0.95a document.

-rw-r--r--  1 mj         227844 May 26 16:41 boot-0.96a

Boot image of the 0.96a+Patch1 kernel.

-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun  5 17:03 root-0.96

    New root image.

-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun  5 17:10 base-1
-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun  5 17:12 base-2
-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun  5 17:14 base-3
-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun  5 17:17 base-4
-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun  5 17:19 base-5

A multi-vol tar archive of the most needed binaries:
fileutils, textutils, shellutils, vi, bash, awk, sed, ....

This stuff is also available for FIDO file request on FIDO node
2:242/6. (Get FILES for more details)

Alas, this was just another image of the boot floppy disk, as I
recognized right now. My apologies to those who ftped it. There
is now a new root image

-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun 12 13:27 root-0.96

which I promise really is the root disk. ;-)

[ Available on ftp.dfv.rwth-aachen.de, pub/linux/mj-bin ]

There was still a serious error in the install script on the root
disk, which caused /mnt (the mounted hard disk) to be copied on
/mnt/mnt an so on ...

So I created yet another root image on ftp.dfv.rwth-aachen.de:

-rw-r--r--  1 mj        1228800 Jun 17 17:00 root-0.96

This is just a small change to the install script:

*** install.old Wed Jun 17 17:15:44 1992
--- install Wed Jun 17 18:45:45 1992
***************
*** 20,26 ****
  fi

echo 'Coping from root floppy disk to hard disk ...'
! tar cf - . | ( cd mnt; tar xvpf -)
  rm -f mnt/install mnt/motd.hd
  cp motd.hd mnt/etc/motd
  echo ' '
--- 20,26 ----

echo 'Coping from root floppy disk to hard disk ...'
! tar clf - . | ( cd mnt; tar xvpf -)
  rm -f mnt/install mnt/motd.hd
  cp motd.hd mnt/etc/motd
  echo ' '

1. Redhat 7.3 - how install new packages from the CD package?

I have Linux Redhat 7.3 and I want to install new packages.
I have inserted installation CD1 and started kpackage. The problem is that
this reads only the packages on this CD and not on the other Redhat CDs.

I have used SuSE Linux before. The configuration program YATS allows to
select packages
which are to be installed. Then it requests to insert the correct CD(s).

How can I achieve this using Redhat?

Thanks,
Torsten
