HARDWARE: Mitsumi LU005S CD-ROM anyone?

Post by SEAN MICHAEL SCOGGI » Fri, 01 Oct 1993 08:16:37

Is anyone using the Mitsumi LU005S CD-ROM with Linux?  I found no
mention of it in the hardware list, and don't want to but it without knowing if it is going to work.

Do CD-ROM with their own interface cards work in general with Linux?

Thanks,
Sean

I am using such a drive with 99pl13 kernel. The driver is included in the
kernel distribution as standard.

Yup.  Got a Mitsumi and love it for the mney I paid and the amount I use it
(just about never :)

Configuring the Mitsumi to work with Linux is a snap.   In fact, pl13 has
Mitsumi support in the kernel code (pl12 may, too).  If you're working with
some older kernel (?)  UPGRADE! No, seriously, there is a patch somewhere
on tsx to your kernel sources for support.  It's by a guy name Martin Harris.
It's called, I think mcd-somtheting.tar.z

Watch out, though, the patches on tsx-11 DO NOT support the LU005S.  The
code in pl13 does.  I'm using pl10, so I used the kernel patches from
mcd-0.3 and modified them for the mcd.c and mcd.h that are in the pl13
source kit.

What about support for the new Mitsumi FX001 doublespeed drive?
Is the FX001 compatible to the LU005?
What significance has the letter "S" anyway? Is this some kind of version
"number" that is relevant (to the kernel software perhaps)?

Hello SEAN and all others,

on 30.09.93 SEAN MICHAEL SCOGGINS wrote to All in USENET.COMP.OS.LINUX:

Yes, in general. :-)

Linux has more drivers for CDROMs with a "proprietary" interface than
any other unix: Sony, Mitsumi,
Matsushita/Kotobuki/Panasonic/Aztech/CreativeLabs.

Best buy today is Matsushita/Panasonic CR-562-B (double-speed, german price:
<300$).
Best buy tomorrow (if the appropriate driver by Martin Harriss gets updated)
will
be the new double-speed Mitsumi FX 001 D, possibly...

Greetings ... Eberhard
