**HELP**: Installing LILO , network, and X Windows

Post by <AS.. » Mon, 14 Jun 1993 02:10:37

Hi, Dear netters:

I am in the process of installing Linux on my 486DX33 machine. After I
installed the A,B,C,X packages, I tried to book from my harddisk but failed.
I believe I need to install the LILO first.  Here are my questions:

    1.  How do I install the LILO?  Is LILO already in my hard disk after
        the above installation?
    2.  I have an NI5210 network card installed but Linux tells me "No
network adaptor detected at boot up". Does Linux support this
card?  If not, does Linux support 3COM 3C503TP?  How do I install
the network connection? (I can now use the network through DOS.)
     3. I spent quite a time in trying to make the X window work but still
haven't got a clue what to do.  Could someone tell me the procedures?

Here is a list of relevant hardware information:

a. Motherboard is 486 VLB, with Intel 486DX33 chip
b. The Video card is Cirrus Logic VLB (SVGA)
c. The monitor is a SVGA 1024 x 768 noninterlaced, with the following scan
   specifications:

              Resolution:640x350/640x480/80x600/1026x768
              Frequencies:
                            Vertical: 47 -- 90 Hz
                            Horizontal: 29--40 KHz, 46--60KHz

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

**HELP**: Installing LILO , network, and X Windows

To all you Linux guru's:

I've just recently installed Linux (SLS 1.01 release) on my system.
The problem I'm encountering is that I cannot get X to run in a
resolution higher than 640x480.  I've read some of the files about
configuring the video card and monitor in Xconfig, but I guess I'm
just too lame to get it working correctly.

Can someone help out here?  The relevant information is:
        video card: Trident 8900c
        monitor   : NEC MultiSync 3d

Any help would be appreciated!

Uhm... Hm. Murphy's Law says that trusting my memory at times like this is a
bad idea, but I'm going to do it anyway. :) There's a Compaq system sitting
on my desk at work (waiting to be installed elsewhere) that has a Multisync 3d
on it. Unless I'm very much mistaken, the Multisync 3d is *not* a super VGA
monitor. If you try to push it to, oh, say 800x600 resolution, all you'll get
is a badly distorted display. You can twiddle with the Xconfig file all you
like: you won't be able to get better than 640x480. (Don't feel bad: while I
have an STB board with an ET4000 chipset and 1 meg of RAM, I only have a
cheapo, generic VGA monitor so I'm stuck in 640x480 too.)

Anyway, what you need is something like a Multisync 3FG or 4FGx (I think those
are the right model numbers -- like I said: my memory can't be trusted). These
monitors are capable of displaying SVGA modes, up to at least 1024x768.
Unfortunately, they are also very expensive (my experience has been that SVGA
monitors typically cost around $600 US, usually more).

Please don't take my word on any of this: consult your monitor's documentation,
your vendor, or some other nearby person who is familiar with NEC monitors.
Ain't computers fun? ;)

Hope this helps.

BEEEP! The Multisync 3D *is* capable of 800x600 and 1024x768! I have got one
with my 8088-XT and a Video7 1024i card. It does 800x600 up to 60Hz and the
1024x768 in interlace, 8514/A-compatible.

The original post doesn't explain *how* X "doesn't run" in higher resolution, so
I can't help with that  -- I doubt it's the monitor that's causing the problem.
And to my knowledge Trident cards are supported by X (?)

I've got an ET4000 card in my 486 box and it works just fine at 1024x768 256c :-)

Andrew.

1. HELP needed to remove LILO & install Windows NT

I hope someone can help me on this one.

I've been trying to install Windows NT, and re-formatted my disk
containing Linux to do so.

Unfortunately, this didn't remove LILO - I think it may be residing in
the boot partition of my other, DOS hard-disk.

Now, whenever I try to run WINNT to set up my system, it boots with
the usual 'LILO loading DOS', then NT tells me that there is a problem
with my disks.

I think that the actual problem is due to the fact that both of my
hard-disks are set up as normal addressing in the CMOS, but NT
required them to be LBA.  However, whenever I try to change the
settings and re-boot, LILO hangs after 'LI', and I can't do anything
else.

I've tried booting Linux using new bootdisk and rootdisk floppies
which I made, but when loading the rootdisk (color144) I get the
following error message:

I have tried copying the file to 2 different floppies, in case of a
disk error, and have also copied the original from 2 different
sources.

I have also tried running fdisk /MBR from DOS, but this makes no
difference.

Does anyone have any idea how I can remove LILO and/or why I am unable
to load Linux from my 2 floppies?

or compuserve 100046,2413, if you don't mind waiting
a couple of months for me to read your message.
