linux password databse

Does anyone have any info on using a database format to store
passwords instead of a textfile? The amount of users on my machine is
getting to be rather large and I'd like to go to database format. I'm
running RedHat linux. Even a url or book or something. I'm not coming
up with anything in my searches. Thanks a lot for any help.

Try searching for the keyword Radius. That's what radius does, keeps a
database for authenticating users.
Hope this helps.

We're having the exact same problem as you. I heard Free-BSD uses
dbm files instead of regular /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files
(IS this true, anyone?). If you get an answer to this problem, please
post it on this newsgroup as it'd be of general interest.
