SLS 1.03 boot problem

SLS 1.03 boot problem

Post by Iain L » Sun, 08 Aug 1993 22:32:53

I have experienced a problem (and a success just to balance things out :)
when booting with the a1 disk from the news SLS 1.03 distribution.

System 1 :-(
Texas Instruments TI4000 Travelmate DX2/50 notebook
CPU:   i486 DX2/50
Ram:   8MB
Disk:  Seagate IDE 209MB
Bios:  Phoenix v1.01 486 version dated copyright 1990 (TI 1992)
Notes: Being running 0.99p4 kernel since Feb'93 without problems

System 2 :-)
Nonname clone
CPU:   i486 DX/33
Ram:   4MB
Disk:  Fujitsu SCSI 520MB
Bios:  Award
Notes: Being running SLS 1.02 0.99p9+ kernel since May'93 without problems

System 1 will not boot past the following being printed on the screen:

LIL

I have disabled all the notebooks power saving tricks and waited 10 mins...

Any ideas?

SLS 1.03 boot problem

: System 1 will not boot past the following being printed on the screen:

: LIL

I'm starting to sound like a broken record.  READ THE LILO FAQ and the README!!
Gee, I just posted this, too... :(

From the LILO README:

LILO start message
------------------

When LILO loads itself, it displays the word "LILO". Each letter is printed
before or after performing some specific action. If LILO fails at some point,
the letters printed so far can be used to identify the problem. This is
described in more detail in the technical overview.

(nothing)  No part of LILO has been loaded. LILO either isn't installed or
the partition on which its boot sector is located isn't active.
L  The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't
load the second stage boot loader. This usually indicates a media failure
or a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad parameters in /etc/lilo/disktab).
LI  The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /etc/lilo/boot.b without running the map
    installer.
LIL  The second stage boot loader has been started, but it can't load the
descriptor table from the map file. This is typically caused by a media
failure or by a geometry mismatch.
LIL?  The second stage boot loader has been loaded at an incorrect address.
This is typically caused by a subtle geometry mismatch or by moving
/etc/lilo/boot.b without running the map installer.
LIL-  The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /etc/lilo/map without running the map
    installer.
LILO  All parts of LILO have been successfully loaded.

This situation was found in the SLS 1.02 release and having not
tried SLS 1.03 I don't know if it is the same. But if you copy
a1.3 to a 5.25 disk or a1.5 to a 3.5 disk then it wouldn't boot
and you would get LIL. So only use a1.3 and a1.5 as follows
a1.3 copy to 3.5 inch disk
a1.5 copy to 5.25 inch disk
If this has changed with SLS 1.03 I can't help.

1. SLS 1.03 problem making usable boot disk...

Despite making a serious effort to RTFM and experiment quite a bit, I am
unable to make a bootable floppy for SLS 1.03...The floppy is made w/o
complaint at the end of the install, but when I attempt boot it, I get
messages something like:

loading....
uncompressing linux....
invalid compressed format...
-system halted

The SLS distribution came from tsx-11.mit.edu and was installed from c:\
install w/o complaint...The disk has 3 partitions:

/dev/hda1 100MB dos
/dev/hda2 ~200MB root
/dev/hda3 16MB swap

mke2fs and mkswap showed a few bad block/pages, but no complaints otherwise

I then ran doinstall /dev/hda2 and specified harddisk /dev/hda1 to install
from...At the end, when I insert the pre-formatted floppy, answered
questions about preset video, modem, mouse, etc...When I was done, neither
the new floppy nor the harddisk were bootable...The only thing I could boot
was the install boot diskette (a1.5)...

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated...E-mail replies
preferred...
