Exiting from X back to text mode

Exiting from X back to text mode

Post by Kru » Fri, 21 May 1993 04:59:25

I've installed everything on the SLS 1.02 release except networking
(tcpip, uucp stuff) and have X up and running.  My question is
about quitting from X and getting back to text mode Linux.

When I exit from twm, the server quits and I get a text screen, but
it is terribly garbled and unreadable.  My multisync MAG monitor
says that the signal is out of range.  The shell still responds to
the keyboard, so I generally just sync, shutdown and reboot.  But it
seems there must be a pretty large problem for this to happen.

Has anybody experienced this behavior?
Have your found any solutions?
If it helps, here is my hardware setup:
586DX2/66 w/ 256k
8 Megs Ram
2x 212 Western Digital HDs
et4000 w/ 1Meg VRAM
15 inch multisync MAG monitor

Please let me know of any solutions to this problem.
Thanks.

I have a similar problem with my SLS 1.0 either with olwm or twm, so i think it depends by the X server.

If I enter into Linux selecting the Normal VGA mode (80x25), I can't back to text mode: the screen is unreadable!
No problems entering in supervga mode 80x50. I can't try with other modes as my monitor is a normal VGA.

Ah, my configuration is 486Cyrix and et4000 1M.

I _had_ the same problem. After leaving X I got a black on black text mode.
The VC's were still alive but the only way to get back to a working text
mode was to reboot the system.
Then I downloaded a newer vgalib (or was it libvga..) package that includes
the program runx which you use instead of startx. runx seems to store the
vga registers and starts startx then. When you leave X runx will write back
the saved registers to your vga card and: Tataaaa. You get back your perfect
text mode.

Why aren't ALL problems that easy to solve :-)

1. Exiting X-Windows back to text mode

I may have missed something in the docs, but I don't think so.

When I exit X-Windows, every second column of text is forced blank on the
old screen. Even printing and typing new things doesn't cure the problem. I
have tried to switch VCs, but they all have every second column missing too.
The only solution is to reboot.

I am using mono X-Windows on a Trident card that appears to have a TVGA9000
chip on it. I use 640x480 resolution with the clock settings in the default
Xconfig.mono file.

On a separate point, Why won't the colour driver recognise this board ?
It says the driver only supports TVGA8900...

Further more (relating to X-Windows and that video card and things) :

1. Will upgrading from 4 to 8 MB of RAM make a significant difference to
   X performance ?

2. How can I get my system to continue running terminals whilst I run
X (either from the command line or using xdm from rc.local) ?

3. If I put more memory on the video card, will this help the colour
   system to run better ?

Cheers.
