shell-init: Permission denied problems

Post by Chris Maro » Thu, 12 Aug 1993 22:05:39

Hello,

I recently installed the latest version of SLS (1.03) and have been getting
the following message whenever I try to bring up an xterm from the workspace/
desktop menu:

shell-init: Permission denied.

Then, whenever I enter any command in that xterm, I keep getting the same
message. To get a working xterm I have to start it by "hand" from the command
line.

Has anybody else had the same problem? If so, please post to this group, or
e-mail to me directly.

Thanks in advance!

Chris.

SLS sets the permissions on one of the directories (possibly the root
directory) so that getcwd(3) fails.  That's where the error message
is coming from.

: the following message whenever I try to bring up an xterm from the workspace/
: desktop menu:

: shell-init: Permission denied.

Try:

chmod a+r /etc/shells

1. shell-init permission denied

After installing XFree86 and doing a few other things, I've managed to
make it so that users other than the root user get a "shell-init:
Permission Denied" error message when logging on, and error messages
stating Permission denied whenever a pwd or ch is attempted.  Can
anyone point me to what this problem may be?
