Can S3 X server support 1280x1024 at higher than 85Hz refresh rate.

This is my first post to this newgroup so I hope this is appropriate for
the group.

I recently heard that the XFree86 S3 X server can support 1280x1024 but
the maximum clock supported is 85hz. Is this true? I was hoping to get
a good refresh rate around 110Hz.

Thanks.

It depends on which S3 board is used.
S3 boards that use the BT485 RAMDAC are currently limited to a 85Mhz clock,
since this RAMDAC requires special programming at high clocks.
This includes most of the high-end S3 cards, like the #9's.

when the XFree folks get the support for it.

S3 boards that use the AT&T RAMDAC can use a 110Mhz clock with the
current XFree2.0 S3 server (but no higher).
The ISA Actix Ultra+ board which I use and sell
has the AT&T RAMDAC, and I recommend it as the best S3 card for XFree2.0.
